"I do whatever I do where I can to help the team. Tackles stats really isn't important to me," said Burgess. "With coach, I was in the box more, 4-3, protecting a lot more. We have more defensive linemen on the field. Coach Grantham I'm covering receivers, tight ends out on the backfield. I don't look at stats. That doesn't amaze me. I just do what I can to help the team win."
Burgess has excellent recognition and speed that allows him to fly in the backfield or jump back in coverage. He really sticks players hard on tackles, but doesn't always fully wrap up. He will be feared by opposing offenses this season and his performance will be important as the secondary meshes.
The senior linebacker seems to realize his obligations off-the-field as well. At the ACC Kickoff, he discussed community service and its importance.
"Place where I come from, the background that I came from, lot of guys don’t make it out, because the amount of people who did make it out don’t give back to the community,” Burgess said. "They don’t come back and share the knowledge and share the wisdom with guys; Give them advice that will help them be better men at life. Me not having that growing up, something that I always wanted is something that I do out with the community. I give back to Louisville as much as I can."
